Taizé Prayer at St John's

Taize Service banner

You are warmly invited to come and join us in the experience of Taizé Prayer which we hold at St John's on occasional dates through the year. Check out the What's On listing for the next service coming up.

Taizé Prayer is characterised by contemplative chants that are now popular throughout the world. This service is a beautiful way to unwind from the stresses of the week and a great way to kick off the weekend.

The service includes a period of silence, Taizé chants and readings from scripture. The worship of Taizé arises out of a truly international and ecumenical community and reminds us that we belong to the worldwide family.

If you don’t have any experience of the Taizé prayer, here are a few notes that may be helpful.

Singing
The beauty of the music and simplicity of the songs lead us into the prayerful silence of our hearts. It reminds us that the worship of heaven has neither beginning nor end and it is with which we join. Through repeating the same words of the song over and over again we make room in our hearts for the Word of God to enter and dwell in us.

Silence
The simplicity of the worship is intended to lead us to a place of stillness in the presence of God. Therefore a period of silence is at the heart of all Taizé prayer. It is in silence that we become ready to meet with God and to receive his love.

Scripture
During the prayer a short piece from the Bible is read. By listening to the Word of God we have a chance to hear the Good News of God’s unfailing love and compassion.
